Class Descriptions
Baby Dance: for infants from 2 months to 1 year
Description: We sing to our infants, touch them, engage them in light movement. We dance with them through the space, play with rhythm and small instruments, and give the infants the chance to see/interact with other infants of a similar age. In each class we will give the children "belly time" (time spent on the belly.) These classes aim to build awareness, coordination and connection with parent and outside world. Class is conducted in English.
Mama/Papa and Me, Creative Dance Classes for Children 1-3 years old
Mondays 3:45-4:40, Feb 6 - March 26 (8 classes)

Description: These classes aim to build mind-body coordination, cooperation, confidence, curiosity in the world around us, and a love for music and dance. Given the young age of the dancers, parents participate fully in the class with their child. Classes are based on the fundamental dance concepts as originally outlined by Rudolf Laban, and then later elaborated on by other dance educators and innovators (i.e. place, direction—up/down, size—small/big, tempo—fast/slow, rhythm, etc.) Each week we focus on one or two of these concepts, and by the end of the session, will have passed through all of the concepts. For small children this focus helps to introduce them to new vocabulary and ways of moving. Each parent will be sent home with a list of the weekly concepts (and basic vocabulary) so that children can continue to practice these at home.
We begin each class with a nursery-rhyme/song warm-up, which follows human developmental patterns and helps to build focus and coordination. Children and parents then delve into dance explorations and improvisations that integrate and explore the concept of the week. We often work with props (i.e. scarves, spots, musical instruments, a parachute), which are fun for the children and help them to better understand and explore the concepts. Class is conducted in English.
Creative Dance Classes for children 4-6 years old
Mon 4:45-5:45, Feb 6 - March 26 (4-6 yr-olds)

Description: These classes aim to educate the whole body and mind, while activating the curious and creative spirit of each child. We begin with a nursery-rhyme warm-up, which follows human developmental patterns, and helps to focus the body and mind. Each class integrates fundamental dance concepts (i.e. place, space, size, tempo, rhythm, etc.) as originally outlined by Rudolf Laban, and then later elaborated on by other dance educators and innovators. Each week we focus on one or two of these concepts, which the children have the chance to learn experientially through explorations and structured improvisations. The children also learn some basic dance movements derived from contemporary dance, ballet, and folk dance, as well as some small choreographies. We end each class with a small choreography project, in which the children create the choreography/dances themselves.
